Francis Pope was born on 1 Mar. 1843 in London, Canada. He attended the London grammar school until the age of sixteen. He was employed as a druggist in Simcoe, Canada, for three years and for two years in Toronto, Canada. In 1865, Francis Pope took passage on the steamer Golden Rule for California via the Isthmus. The vessel was wrecked on a coral reef in the Caribbean Sea. Pope and his fellow passengers lived on the reef for two weeks, until removed by a U.S. frigate and carried to Panama. Pop...
